The Giving Energy of Meal Packaging at Chicago's JLM Abundance Center
Sharing and giving were on their minds.
During a crisp sunny day in early March, 2012, dozens of volunteers, glowing with smiles and radiant loving energy, gathered in the spacious gymnasium-theater of the JLM Abundant Life Community Center in Chicago. In their hearts was a desire to help those afflicted with hunger and food insecurity. And as they lathered their hands in disinfectant, and put on their aprons, hairnets, and gloves, the volunteers joined hands in producing 11,000 nutritious, flavorful meals of pasta and cheese - fortified with vitamins, nutrients, and protein - specifically designed to nurture bodies and lift spirits. But while quality production was paramount - it was also great fun. Swaying to fast-beat, pulsing music, students formed into production lines, assembling meals from bins of pasta and soy, adding cheese packages fortified with protein, nutrients, and vitamins, and carefully weighing, heat-sealing and then packing into boxes. And when the boxing was complete, joining in a throaty cheer to celebrate their gift of life to those in need.
The celebratory mood continued as the Genesis Entertainment Drum-Line(www.facebook.com/GenesisEntertainment10) performed - lending their talent and vibratory energy in support of the hungry.Volunteers included associates of the Ashunti Residential Management Systems, founded by Regina Lewis; local residents invited by the Reverend Johnny L.Miller; and a team from the respected international charity, Outreach (www.Outreachprogram.org) and the Chicago based charity, Feed6 (www.feed6.org). Funding for the meals was donated by the 6th grade class of Ogden Avenue School in La Grange, Illinois, which had raised funds for the hungry as a class project.
The Ashunti Residential Management Systems (www.ashuntirms.org) was founded by Regina Lewis, a prominent Chicago activist for those in need, as a multi-social service agency, serving the socio-economically disadvantaged members of the community. The JLM Abundant Life Community Center (www.thejlmcenter.org), led by Johnny L. Miller, was constructed in 2008 through the generous efforts of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Opportunity. The JLM Life Center brings the community together through enriching leisure time experiences and positive self-development experiences. Its programs and events are designed to reach out to all ages and contribute to the center’s sense of place in the community.
