With its balanced emphasis on academic achievement and spiritual illumination, The Islamic Foundation School seeks to instill
pride, devotion, and excellence in its students. These qualities were abundantly evident on Friday, June 1st, 2012 as hundreds of
its students and faculty gathered to package 20,000 nutritious meals for hungry local children and families. The all-day event was a culmination of weeks of thorough planning by teachers Angela Salva and Nyla Khan, and funded through the generous and enthusiastic efforts of students and faculty. As they filed into the packaging work area, gowning in aprons and hairnets, and lathering hands in disinfectant, the young students brought an inner joy and deeply felt sense of giving that filled the room with vibrant energy.
For several hours Friday morning and afternoon, students worked production lines - in groups of 10 to 12 - filling plastic packages with
macaroni, soy protein, and a vitamin-enriched cheese sauce, which when boiled and mixed in butter and milk, produces a hearty meal
for six, several times more nutritious than the standard supermarket mac and cheese offerings. As students are well aware, the need in the Chicago region is so great - with hundreds of thousands of children and families depending on food banks and soup kitchens. Packed with love - and a lot of joy - the 20,000 meals were distributed to those in need by the Northern Illinois Food Bank and the Salvation Army.
