Hunger Has an Illinois Address
Illinois is home to some of the world's most productive farmland, major corporations, thriving communities and one of America's largest cities. Yet hundreds of thousands of our neighbors still struggle to consistently put enough nutritious food on the table.
Food insecurity exists in every county in Illinois.
It affects children and families. Seniors living on fixed incomes. Veterans. Working adults. People with disabilities. And neighbors who may have jobs and homes, but still find themselves choosing between groceries and other basic necessities.
Hunger isn't somewhere else.
It's here. And it affects our neighbors.
13.7% of Illinois Residents Face Food Insecurity. According to Feeding America's latest Map the Meal Gap research using 2024 data, an estimated 13.7% of Illinois residents experience food insecurity. That's approximately 1 out of every 7 Illinoisans.
Food insecurity means not always having reliable access to enough nutritious food to live an active, healthy life.
Sometimes it is temporary, triggered by a lost job, unexpected medical bill or family emergency.
For others, it is an ongoing struggle caused by the rising costs of food, housing, transportation, health care and other necessities.
Hunger Exists in All 102 Illinois Counties
Food insecurity isn't limited to one neighborhood, one income level or one part of Illinois.
From Chicago and its suburbs to central and southern Illinois, people experience food insecurity in every one of Illinois counties.
The need can sometimes be surprising.
Cook County
15.1% of residents experienced food insecurity in 2024.
That means hunger affects roughly one out of every seven people living in Illinois' most populous county.
DuPage County
Even in one of Illinois' most prosperous counties, thousands of people face hunger. Recent Feeding America data have shown food insecurity affecting tens of thousands of DuPage County residents.
Lake County

Will County
Food insecurity remains an important community health concern throughout Will County, with particularly significant disparities among certain populations and communities.
Kane, McHenry and Kendall Counties
Hunger reaches Illinois' growing suburban communities as well. Families who appear financially stable can still find themselves struggling when housing, child care, transportation, health care and grocery costs collide.
And these communities represent only part of the story.
